ABOUT THE FIRM

Cox/Dirks Architects, P.C. is a full-service commercial architecture firm that has operated in Lubbock and the surrounding area for over 60 years. With our support staff and consultants, we feel that we can provide the professional services necessary to satisfy the requirements of today's complex buildings and fulfill the need for both functional and aesthetic excellence.

The firm was originally established in 1960 by Billy J. Cox in Lubbock, Texas as Bill Cox & Associates. Mr. Cox believed in developing a solid relationship with the client based on integrity, trust, and communication. He began his career designing residences, but as clients experienced the quality of his work, they began seeking his services on commercial projects, including small mercantile, financial institutions, and professional offices. As his business grew, Mr. Cox added personnel over the years and eventually partnered with one of his junior architects, James H. “Jimmy” Dirks. In 1991, Bill and Jimmy created and incorporated their new company, Cox/Dirks Architects, P.C., and continued to provide architectural services throughout the region.

In 1999, Bill Cox retired from the firm and Jimmy Dirks took over sole ownership of the firm and continued to grow his client base. While many of the residential projects began to decline, the firm’s commercial work expanded into larger and more diverse projects, including large retail centers, larger financial institutions, numerous municipal projects, and logistical warehouses. As the business grew, Mr. Dirks added personnel over the years and partnered with one of his junior architects, Jason R. Bush. Mr. Bush became vice president in 2009 and president in 2016, when Mr. Dirks retired from the firm.

Mr. Bush continues to provide professional services with the same commitment to building good client relationships that are based on integrity, trust, and clear communication. As President of the firm, Mr. Bush has renewed the firm’s activity in the residential sector by providing services on both single-family projects and multi-family projects. During his time as President, Mr. Bush has also broadened the firm’s public sector work in both Texas and New Mexico. He has also expanded the firm’s commercial work to include projects in New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Kansas. Although Mr. Bush has expanded the firm’s services to surrounding states, he has kept the firm’s primary focus on serving Lubbock and the West Texas region.

THE PROCESS

We understand that our clients expect us to utilize our experience, knowledge, and skills to transform their abstract goals and ideas into tangible solutions by proactively listening to their wants and desires. We strive to successfully provide this service to our clients by asking motivating and sometimes probing questions to understand our client’s needs, wants, and overall desired outcome for the project. After establishing a unified program and clear scope of work for the project, we then collaborate and strategize with our clients to move the project forward with a cost-effective mindset and within an achievable time limit so the general contractor can complete the project in budget and on time.

We will utilize our experience, knowledge, and skills to transform your goals and ideas into tangible solutions by proactively listening to your needs, wants, and overall desired outcomes for the project.

With a more complete understanding of the preferred function and potential form of the project, we can provide a master concept package. This is a preliminary package usually consisting of a site plan, floor plan, exterior elevations, and if requested photo realistic renderings.

Reviewing the master concept package with you is where we discuss any practical changes that need to be made to reflect your needs and wants. Most accurately achieving your vision with practicality is our top concern during this part of the process.

Once the master concept package is finalized, we will produce high quality and detailed construction documents that effectively communicate the intent of the project design to all parties involved.

Then we will collaborate and strategize with you to move the project forward by giving guidance about general contractors and cost-effective decisions. This is to ensure the project will have the best chance of being completed on time and in budget.
